Metro sent around an announcement yesterday that in the past 100 days, train doors have opened on the side without a platform four times. While they say these mistakes mark only four instances in about the last 22 million times that train doors have opened, they're taking the problem seriously enough that for the foreseeable future, Metrorail operators have been instructed to open train doors manually. Train doors are supposed to open automatically, although operators have always closed them

Creative landscaping in Idaho

Thu, 17 Apr 2008 13:43:47 PDT
Via Political Wire: "A 60-foot phallus created by vandals on the grassy slopes beneath the Idaho governor's mansion has been fig-leafed over by work crews on their second try," the Idaho Statesman reports. "The grassy graffiti appeared in July after someone applied extra-strength weed killer. Officials said at the time it was too late in the growing season to attempt to remove the image." It's old news, but still pretty hilarious. I just wonder what message they were trying to send.

(If you missed either of the first two parts, you can read them here and here). Timeline Entry: W.H.O.'s Iraqi Civilian Death Toll This entry reads in full: "January 9, 2008, W.H.O. No delay for Snipes sentencing

Thu, 17 Apr 2008 13:45:56 PDT
For lots of reasons detailed in prior posts, I am really looking forward Wesley Snipes' sentencing on tax evasion charges next week. Thus, I was pleased to see this new news on this front: A federal judge has rejected a motion to delay actor Wesley Snipes' sentencing on tax evasion charges, scheduled for next week. Senior U.S. District Judge William Terrell Hodges denied without comment a bid by Snipes' legal team to postpone the sentencing scheduled for April 24. In the motion filed Tuesday,

Philips latest gadget - the DCP951 Portable DVD Player - reverses that trend. It has a 9″ TFT LCD screen. Philips designed this media player to be different from its competition.

If Anwar is not "PM of Israel", What Then?

Wed, 16 Apr 2008 20:39:10 PDT
It is not the first excuse Anwar Ibrahim used to justify his attack on Dr Mahathir. He had used Dr Mahathir's remark on his ex-convict status and many other remark. When listening to Anwar's entertaining speech, be analytical and extra critical to his logic of arguments and conclusions. It's usually doubt-creating logic appealing to the simpleton masses and not supported by hard evidence and fact. Evidence and fact he presents are usually heresay or circumstantial or half complete information.

China Protest

Wed, 16 Apr 2008 20:51:00 PDT
On Tuesday, I was tipped off that an SMS was being passed around encouraging people to place a heart on their messenger and boycott Carrefour in protest at the Olympic flame's experience in France. Sure enough my messenger now looks something like this. There's no need to have an extended commentary on this except to say that nobody questions the Chinese people's love of their country. There's a lot to love, and I'm particularly fond of the people of Beijing. However all countries/governments

Baze: reactions elsewhere

Wed, 16 Apr 2008 21:01:43 PDT
Adam Liptak’s views on Baze in the NYT, private emails, & CJLF’s initial reactions (who, without reading, I agreed with on what quotes were the heart of the opinion) )indicate a near uniform reaction to Baze — we haven’t seen the last of lethal injection challenges. Today’s opinion appears to stand for the proposition that on the record before Court a successful challenge to lethal injection can not be had, and without more, lethal injection challenges in other jurisdictions must fail as we

Another Trend Style Day Emerges

Wed, 16 Apr 2008 21:06:13 PDT
Wednesday’s price action resulted in a type of “Trend Day” which gave nimble and aware traders an excellent opportunity to profit. Let’s take it point by point. 1. The morning opened with a gap just at 100 Dow points ($1.00 on the DIA). This was your first clue that we might have a trend day develop. The gap also occurred well outside yesterday’s range (reference my earlier post “Three Types of Morning Openings“). It’s sort of like a tornado forming. You get the initial watch and then the
